Why Flooring Wastage Matters

Every floor installation generates off-cut waste. Straight-lay patterns waste around 10% — the minimum. Herringbone and diagonal patterns require significantly more because planks must be cut at angles, creating larger off-cuts. Always buy the wastage-adjusted amount, not the exact floor area, to avoid running short mid-installation.

Keep 2–3 extra planks after installation for repairs. Store them flat in the same room so they acclimatise. Matching replacement planks years later is difficult — batches change colour and texture.

Most manufacturers recommend 48–72 hours acclimatisation — leaving unopened packs flat in the room where they'll be installed. This allows the material to adjust to the room's temperature and humidity before laying. Skipping this step can cause expansion gaps, buckling or shrinkage after installation. Engineered wood and solid hardwood need longer acclimatisation than laminate or LVP.
LVP (luxury vinyl plank) is 100% waterproof and better for kitchens, bathrooms and high-moisture rooms. Laminate is wood-fibre core and not waterproof — it swells and delaminates if flooded. LVP also tends to be softer underfoot and quieter. Laminate often looks more realistic at the premium end. Both are durable and easy DIY installs. For most rooms: LVP wins on practical grounds.
