How This Is Calculated

Annual heating cost = estimated energy consumption (kWh) × fuel unit cost (p/kWh). Energy consumption is estimated from floor area, insulation factor and hours of daily heating. UK average gas price is approximately 6.2p/kWh, electricity varies by tariff (typically 24–28p/kWh standard, 7–9p/kWh off-peak E7).

At current UK energy prices, heat pumps are typically 15–30% cheaper to run than gas boilers due to their high efficiency (COP of 3–4, meaning 1 unit of electricity produces 3–4 units of heat). However, heat pump installation costs £8,000–£15,000 vs £2,000–£3,000 for a boiler. The payback period is 8–15 years unless using the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.
